The Joint CFTC-SEC Advisory Committee on Emerging Regulatory Issues held its inaugural meeting on May 24, 2010, 18 days after the extraordinary market events of May 6, 2010 (the so-called "flash crash"). The committee was organized in response to the events of May 6, and is comprised of a consortium of current and former regulators, academics, and other industry leaders. At its initial meeting, the committee offered its preliminary findings of the flash crash in both the futures and securities markets, outlined the committee's "next steps," and held a Q&A session.[1]
